In a recent speech given by Lee Rainie, a frequent author for the PEW research Foundation, the emerging problems and potential issues with regard to social media and the internet, in general, are discussed. Rainie outlines seven different indicators that we have or will have more stress from the web. “The future of the internet and its social media offspring seems up for grabs these days. Researchers have documented the impact of weaponized narratives aimed at creating confusion and conflict among groups in order to undermine civilizations; how bot armies use new technology tools to manipulate public opinion through “computational propaganda”; and the ways surveillance and filtering techniques are used by governments to undermine opponents. Moreover, the U.S. intelligence community now lists cyber war as a critical threat.” Although he does offer some possible solutions, I’m not convinced.
